Vacation Time
Thank you for joining me again. At the outset, I want to let you know that I'll be on a week's vacation starting this Saturday, the 17th November and returning the following Saturday, 24th November. It's been hectic in the business and at home... I'm looking forward to some "chill" time... in the sun! In between work, we also decided to finish the basement of our townhouse. We're 95% done - just waiting for one special-order door for under the stairs and a little bit more paint on the doors. Our renovator, Horia has done an excellent job for us.

Barbara and I and a couple of long-time friends are going down to to the Mizner Place in Weston, Florida (Ft. Lauderdale area). We were recommended to go to this resort by another couple of friends... looks fabulous..

Mizner Place

While I'm away, I will have my phone with me and of course my computer. As in the past my associates and colleagues, Alan and AJ will be available to take care of those emergencies that might come up. Issues that can wait will be attended to on my return. I will also be checking email on a regular basis. The resort does have High Speed Internet and hopefully wireless access too. After all, I won't be too far away. Aren't computers wonderful... and did I say vacation?

Microsoft Office 2007
Is it worth upgrading to the latest version of Office, even you're not using Windows Vista? Yes Office 2007 works with Windows XP!

Probably the single biggest change you will see in the 2007 Suite is the use of tabs, called The Office Fluent User Interface. Initially, it will make you crazy finding the tools that you've become familiar with over the years, but persevere. You'll get used to the way things work. Another new feature is the Office Button...

Office Button

It contains all the important features like, Save, Save As, Print, including preview, and more.

Having used the suite for around 3 months I would encourage you to make the change. Call or email me for an opportunity to try an evaluation copy.

Wireless Technologies
The wireless technologies standard 802.11 started off with 802.11a working in the 5GHz frequency band. Very quickly we saw the emergence of 802.11b working in the 2.4GHz band with a maximum data transfer rate of 11Mb/sec. We now see 802.11g and 802.11n. 802.11g operates in the same frequency band as 802.11b but with speeds up to 54Mb/sec. We are also seeing the latest incarnation, 802.11n with speeds up to 350Mb/sec. An enhancement to 802.11g and 802.11n is a technology called MIMO (multi in, multi out). This refers to the design of the wireless device having multiple inbound antennae and multiple outbound antennae. The idea behind this to to give you greater wireless range that previously achieved. I have installed a few Wire-G with MIMO routers with good success. If you'd like to get deeper into the technologies, Wikipedia has some good definitions and explanations.

Are you ready for fall - your computer, that is?
You decided not to get your computer cleaned up in the spring, you've managed to keep working through the heat of the summer and now we're into fall. Will your computer survive the heat from the furnace with the build-up of dust and lint? I've written in the past about heat being the "killer" of electronic components. Now would be a good time to have me come out and give the interior a good blow out before it's too cold to be working outside. I'm offering my clients this service at a reduced rate of $75.00. Why, you ask? It's because I'll schedule it when I'm in your area - I won't be coming out especially for you and as a result, it gives me some flexibility and less travel time, so I'm passing it on to you. Call for an appointment. At the same time I'll give your system the "once over" from a software perspective.
